Cheeseburger Canyon

by Rob Blue on October 14th, 2006

There is a lot of confusion about the name of Cheeseboro Canyon. A lot of this stems from the fact that the main trailhead is on Chesebro Road not Cheeseboro Road. It is in fact named Cheeseboro Canyon and the history behind it may give the answer as to why.

The story that I read said that both Cheeseboro and Palo Comado canyons were owned by Bob Hope at one time. Mr. Hope a purchased the land with hope of building a golf course there. As it turned out, those canyons happen to be a major wildlife corridor. So a deal was struck with Mr. Hope to trade his land for some other land and make the canyons State Park land. Since Bob Hope was a very funny guy I can only guess that the Cheeseboro name was just him doing his thing.

There’s the local history lesson for today.

Today Bryan, Mikel and I hit the trails for a nice easy ride. The recent rains have completely changed the trail conditions here. There were a lot of loose and dusty patches that were closer to sand traps (maybe that’s why Bob liked this place) than trails and the rain has help to firm them up. The mellow pace also allowed me to check out some new tires.

Mikel has been riding the Kenda Small Block Eights since they became available and loves them. The tread pattern looks perfect for the trails that we ride out here so I thought I would give them a try too. I think we have a real winner here. I will post an update after some more rides but I really liked them today. I was running my new standard setup of the non-UST tires filled with Stan’s NoTubes sealant on my Stan’s ZTR Olympic Disc wheels at 20 psi in front and 23 psi in back. I had great traction from a really low knob profile tire. Awesome!

The ride was fun with no drama except for my loose skewer. I am pretty picky about the stuff that I use on my bikes and I must say that I am not liking these American Classic skewers at all.

I don’t like the feel of them and I feel the throw is just too far which makes them harder to cinch up. Consequently, today was the second time that my skewer loosened up on a ride. For those of you who like to grind off the lawyer tabs on your forks, they have kept me upright twice in a week.

One last thing, we finally found out what the story was on all of the white plastic on the hillsides in Cheeseboro Canyon. Non-native plant removal. Go figure.
