FRM for Christmas
by Rob Blue on December 27th, 2006
Right before Christmas I got a nice package from our friends at FRM. The big highlight in the selection of goodies is the new 2007 AIR-WAY SSC BiCarbon Ti Stable Platform 85 fork. This thing is light!
I immediately took it over to the boys at Helens to get it installed. I know I am known for doing all of my own wrenching but I am still not set up to cut down carbon steerers. The bike looks stunning with the FRM forks.
The overall weight of my Scott Scale LTD is now under 19 pounds race ready!
Well, of course a good test ride was in order so I called my friend Dennis up and off we went on a nice long ride in the Santa Monica mountains.
This ride kicked my butt in the end. First off, Dennis is a really strong rider. He commutes to and from work on a single speed over the Santa Monica mountains. He is even still doing this every day in the winter riding both directions in the dark! Dennis was dusting me throughout the entire ride. I must admit that I was also really stupid and unprepared by bringing only two water bottles and no food. I was bonking big time on the last few climbs. That's what I get for thinking that I was going to be able to just have a casual easy ride on Christmas Eve. Once the pedals start turning I usually get all caught up in hammering.
There are some amazing views from up above Pacific Palisades on this ride. You can see a huge stretch of the coastline and pretty much all of the Los Angeles basin. Very cool.
So how did the forks feel? The forks felt pretty good.
They fall between the SID and Reba in terms of construction and also in feel. They are not wet noodle feeling like the SIDs but not as rock solid as the Rebas. Don't take the "not as rock solid" perception as a negative though. The forks tracked spot on through the rough and rocky downhill sections of the Backbone trail. I still need to spend more time on them playing wth the various setting before I can give a definitive opinion on them so stay tuned for more later.

[…] I got a great package from Italy a couple of days ago. The super trick FRM Airway Stable Platform 100 BiCarbon for my 29er. I wanted one of these as soon as I put the ultra trick Airway 85 SSV BiCarbon Ti on my Scott Scale. FRM makes some of the coolest carbon stuff out there. I wish it was easier to get here in the US. With the catalog of cutting edge products that they are currently offering I’m sure it won’t be long before someone steps up to distribute them here. Hey, I may even do it myself. […]
