The California Downhill State Championships Race in Tehachapi, CA : 4/1/07
Congratulations to Evomo Team Rider: Michael Takahashi (pictured above) who took home 1st place on this combined, two run race format at the Woodward West Facility in Tehachapi, CA. The DH course consisted of drops to fast berms, numerous jumps, a tricky rock section, off camber turns, and a fun whoop section, and then finishing up with a jump at the finishline. Here is a NORBA NMBS Phoenix race report from Semi-Pro Evomo Sponsored Racer Clint Hosman:
The last day of the Nova Desert Classic was as expected very hot. Making things even more fun however was the addition of an extra twenty riders to the field so lining up at the start where 71 Semi Pro men. I was frankly surprised by the turn out as the last few NORBA events I have done only had about 50 competitors at this level. There was competition from twenty states there yesterday so from the start you could tell it was on.
The first lap was amazingly dusty, I choose the wrong line to fill the starting pen and ended up in the back so I was sucking dust the whole way. The trail here is very open which allows you to see very far ahead and it looked like a giant dust cloud moving through the desert. I didn’t let my poor position get me down and settled in banking on the strategy of all these out of state guys blowing up in the heat.
By the end of the middle of the second ten mile lap I could tell my idea was right as I begin to regain position and pass people and was never passed again for the whole race. On each lap my wife was handing off two bottles right out of the cooler so I was able to some what keep the temperature down.
As I came into the third lap I was really starting to love the feeling the 29er wheels where giving me, I felt like a locomotive that couldn’t be stopped. The momentum carried me effortlessly through each corner and all the sand just hoping to trip me up.
By the start of lap four I was on a roll and every one I passed looked like they where completely shelled. I rode in to a 31st place finish out of 71 guys on the day. This allowed me to recover much of my losses in the TT and super D so that I could finish 18th in the overall standings out of 50.
It was a great weekend of racing. I am very pleased with the new bike and can’t wait for Sea Otter in two weeks. If anyone is going please email me I would love to meet you and do some riding on Saturday before the race.
