Evomo Team Bike Build-Fest

by Bryan on August 20th, 2007

Well this last Sunday didn’t include a regular ride. Why you ask? Well for a few reasons.

A) It was hot… not Jessica Alba hot - think hot like 95 degrees and dry SoCal HOT.

B) We had to go help Walker have a girl-on-bike bachelor party (well, we didnt make it to Durango, but we were there in spirit). Congrats Walker!

C) We spent the day building some sweet new team bikes from Turner.

Sweet like the juicy flavors of an apple cobbler smothered in vanilla ice cream and being served up by a naked… whoa now. Okay, let me get back to the story here. Yes, a bunch of boxes, some frames, tires and later that afternoon we had a pair of finished Turner Nitrous XC bikes. Here is how it went down sans the ice cream…

It was pretty much like when you wake up on Christmas morning when you were 12 and run down to see what ole St. Fat Tire brought. Fizik saddles for everyone. The 260 gram Gobi with custom color scheme to match the bikes of course.

Now that we have some saddles its time to build some bikes! As you can see in the photo bellow, there are a lot of parts that are required to build a top of the line mountain bike. Its actually quite impressive to me that so many different companies can all manufacture components that actually assemble together perfectly.

The first thing to go on, the carbon seat post so we could get the bike up in the workstand. Next up the Chris King headset via the Park Tool Bearing Cup Press. Although everything seemed pretty plug and play it was definitely great to have Robs experience from wrenching bikes when he was younger. Stuff like installing the headset and cutting down the steerer tube are definitely not your everyday maintenance requirements on a bike… although I know some guys I ride with who dont even know how to change a tire.

I prepped the Stans ZTR Olympic wheels by mounting the Avid Juicy Carbon rotors, Sram cassette and Kenda Nevegal Tires with Stans No Tubes Sealant of course.

The bottom bracket went on easy - threaded right on. Added some Crank Brothers 2Ti pedals to those. These are actually 3Ti with Ti spindles added.

Once the headset was in place we needed to cut down the steerer tube on the Rock Shox Reba Team fork. This required another handy device from Park Tool, the threadless saw guide and a 12 inch 32 tooth hack saw.

Install the fork and add on the Team issue Ergon P1 grips (thanks Jeff Kerkove and Ergon), the Avid Matchmaker mounts. These Matchmakers allow you to mount the shifters and brake levers on one clean mount to the FRM riser bar which is mounted to the FRM stem. The Avid Juicy Carbons were next to get mounted.

Next up, front and rear derailleurs. Sram XO rear and Shimano XT front. The Sram hollowtech chain gets threaded and then the cables get run from the cockpit to each derailleur. At this point things are really close.

Dialing in the shifting took almost no time at all. Then adjust the brakes to allow proper clearance on the rotors and adjust the air pressure in the Reba fork and the Fox rear shock. The last thing to go on was the Fizik Gobi saddle with custom color scheme (to match the bike of course!).

Complete Turner Nitrous weighs in at 24.11 poundsB and B with their new Turner Nitrous bikes

We had to bust out the digital scale and see what this baby weighs in at. A lovely 24.11 pounds. So there you have it 5 hours later Brandon and I have two sweet Turner Nitrous XC Race bikes.

Stay tuned for Rob’s Weight Wennie Report on how light his Turner Nitrous is.

thats freaking sweet guys, but I am kind of disappointed in Bryans bike… come on - 24 pounds! you will never win on a bike that heavy. I think you had better up grade something to carbon and quick.
