Keep your complaints to yourself

by Brett Miller on October 17th, 2007

So I am on the wounded warrior projects soldier ride after a gnarly couple years in the hospital for those of you who don’t know. I am basically touring the country and hitting spots here and there with the soldier ride to raise awareness and support for wounded troops with disabilities due to combat and other injuries. we get out and ride some miles with a police escort and raise money for the cause in order for more events.

So I flew out of Sacramento, CA and spent 4 hours next to some raging drunk idiots on the plane. (I may have been one of them) and then landed in Ohare and spent over 2 hours in layover and tossed down a few more when others overheard where I was going and what I was doing. By the time I got to Durham, NC I was feeling no pain and time went by rather quickly. checked into my hotel and waited for the sun to rise. The sun rose and my ride showed up, talk about Rock Star status, I actually rode in a limo for the hour to Fayetteville from my hotel with my bike inside. I would have to say it was the last thing i had expected but it sure was EVOMO style

The day was basically getting out the adaptive sports cycles, everything that ranges from hand bike to adaptive bars on road bike for upper limb amputees.

I spent a bit of time in the day helping out some of the other guys since I have quite a bit of knowledge witht he equipment and getting things put together and sizing but in the mean time I was tagging most of everything I could find with EVOMO stickers that Bryan had sent me out with. I was even able to slap some prosthetics of the bunch which makes for some funny stories later in the week.

The group meshed pretty well since we have literally spilled the same blood in the same mud and shared a few war stories and talked about injuries and a smattering of military hospital occurances but the main topic was cycling.

My roommate for the week is Chris Ayers a retired marine captain who had his hamstring conveniently removed by a rocket propelled grenade while in Iraq. Needless to say the stories around here aren’t average and usually aren’t “G” rated with language and content in mind.

It is going to be an awesome week.

Man these guys have been through so much. The average person has no idea what war does to so many soldiers and what is really happening over in Iraq.

    More people need to know.

I’m on the ride with Brett. He’s a madman. He’s been keeping me amused with his Borat imitations.
