Bring the Rukus, but Don’t Bring the Cops

by Sedrik Vomir on June 8th, 2008

We like to get the guys together and do some photo sessions for our rides. Its lots of fun and we get lots of great material for promoting the brand and creating graphics for our apparel line.

Lately we have been embracing this theme of “Bring the Rukus”. Its become the team motto. Its on the jerseys and stickers too. Well this weekend we brought on too much rukus. Seriously.

We wanted to get some urban stuff going on, especially since we are based in Los Angeles. I mean really, its a mecca of street style and plenty of man made places to get some great shots, sweet jumps and all that.

Me and Jami headed out to Los Angeles were we had scoped out some places to shoot pics, places we figured were low key and no one would bother us. I brought minimal gear to shoot stills and wanted to do some 35mm negative with a single portable strobe and a remote trigger.

The gravity of the situation is that we got way to ballzy trying to table a couple different parked cars… you know just across the hood. We didnt even damage or touch anything. Next thing you know some guy is yelling at us and saying he is going to call the cops… well the reality was he ALREADY called the cops and by the time we finished yelling at each other a cop car was pulling up… Jami bolted on his bike and I stayed behind the tree that i was standing at. They didnt see me and instead took off running after Jami.

I quickly snagged some pics of that and then started walking casual like in the direction they went. At this point my adrenaline is pumping triple time, but I figured Jami would out run them easy! As I rounded the corner, I see its this industrial area and Jami pins it through this narrow chain link gate and I hear what I thought was a crash sound… The 2 cops weren’t that far off and I catch up ducking behind a car…

Basically it was a dead end. Private property – gated area… Jami had ditched the bike and leaps up the fence… and gets snagged. S**T! Like I said, I am nervous and I am snapping off pics of all this and then a cop sees me peering around this car with my camera. Next thing you know I am sprinting like this time I thought a puma was chasing me in Colorado. Anyways, the adrenaline is seriously about to make my heart explode. I dont know how I lost him. But I made it to my car and just laid low.

about 15 minutes later they drive by with Jami in the back!

Anyways, we are dealing with a lot of crap right now so more on this story in the weeks to come.

I dont have the pics of the jump cause I was shooting film for that and digital as a back up. I am getting the film back from the lab this week (I hope!). These are the digital pics…

Oh and please, dont go out and bring the rukus via any illegal actions… kind of felt I had to say that disclaimer.

Remember, when you go out and have some fun, be careful and respect everyone and always respect the cops… even if your impulse says run, dont run, just stay and talk – everything will be wall cool that way.

on pinkbike i see a pic of him table the hood of the cop car, was that b4 or after all this? and man, the gun was deffinitly not nessesary, its a kid on a bike, havin fun, progressing in his own sport, no need to rip him off a fence and point a gun in his face.

Looking at these pics reminds me of something I saw in Boulder Colorado. A cop chased a couple of kids on a moped all over campus. When he caught them he through them on the ground just like the dude above. A HUGE overreaction to a couple of drunk collage kids. I think a lot of cops take advantage of their power and authority. They just need to chill and not get on such a power rush.

  12. A powerful share, I just given this onto a colleague who was doing just a little analysis on this. And he in actual fact bought me breakfast because I found it for him.. smile. So let me reword that: Thnx for the deal with! However yeah Thnkx for spending the time to discuss this, I really feel strongly about it and love reading extra on this topic. If possible, as you turn out to be expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more details? It is highly useful for me. Massive thumb up for this blog put up!
