Riding For Fun, Still Is Fun!
by Tim Ek on October 21st, 2008
Well, another 12 hour solo season is complete and for a while so are the ultra long, sometimes freezing cold, training epics. Instead, it’s back to basics!
The other day I thought to myself why don’t I just spend a couple of weeks now that the season is done and just ride for the fun of it. Yeah, there’s a concept, riding with no clear immediate mission at stake. The thought of hanging up the geared high tech rigs in the garage and taking down the simplified, stripped down, bare bones, good ole Surly 1×1.
Getting back on the single speed always has a way of bringing back those old feelings of why we got into this sport in the first place. You know, when you can’t make a climb you feel like you should be able to, so you turn around and try it again, and again, then pretty soon you just decide it’ll have to wait till next time, because now you’re just too tired to make it. I miss those days, so that’s my mission now. Plus, Fall riding in Duluth, MN just doesn’t get any better. When the trails are hard and there’s a bite in the air it just plain feels good, not to mention all the leaves changing colors, that’s pretty cool too.
Anyway, I thought I’d throw the camera in my pocket the other day to let you guys see what some upper Midwest riding looks like. I’m always thinking how great riders in Ca. and Az. have it. Hell, maybe they’d think I have it pretty good too. So, here’s a glance at what 3 minutes outside my front door looks like.

When it is 120 here in PHX that’s when I am wishing for the great white north.
