Dave Wiens is Committed to Family & Winning (Part 1)

Husband, father, winner of a couple World Cups, and oh, did I mention that Dave Wiens is a 6 time consecutive winner of one of the most grueling mountain bike races around, the Leadville 100. Although when talking to Mr. Wiens, after a few minutes, you realize he is Dave the dad and family man who just really loves to mountain bike, I mean really, really loves it!
He speaks with such an excitement and passion about mountain biking that makes it seem as though he just borrowed a bike from a friend and went for his first mountain bike ride only the day before. That’s far from the case since Dave has been riding mountain bikes and winning races since the 1990s. And this isn’t the first interview for Dave since wining his 6th Leadville which including beating out one of, if not the most, famous cyclist in modern history, Lance Armstrong. The thing about Lance is that even if you are not a cyclist of any nature, you know who he is so when its announced that the 7 time Tour de France winner is coming to Leadville to race mountain bikes, everyone wants to watch. Dave is very modest and speaks highly of Lance and Floyd, who raced Leadville in 2007, but stated simply, “really, they were just un-prepared.”
But that’s not what I wanted to talk to Dave about. Not how was it to beat Lance or how much does your bike weigh but rather how do you find the time to train for an epic race like Leadville and win! How do you find the time despite having three kids and a wife who is an on-call registered nurse?
Dave said “it comes down to having the commitment to make it work. If you have the commitment then you will find the time to train. Take advantage of the gaps in your day and go for a ride” he stated. Of course having the right job helps and in this case his job includes the design of trail systems, consulting and construction to a wide range of clients. “If I had a job that required me to work 8 hours a day in a cubical I wouldn’t be able to compete and win races like Leadville.” Wiens said. “What are your priorities in life? Figure that out and it will help determine your commitment and even what kind of job is appropriate for you.” continued Wiens.
For example Wiens said his priorities are:
1. Family
2. Being active and outdoors
3. His Career
Being conscious that whatever his career would be, it needed to allow plenty of time with his family and for him to active and outdoors. As I continued my conversation with Dave, I realized that if only we all could sit down and make these determining factors in our lives. I think we would all be much happier and healthier human beings rather than letting ourselves be another rat in the race. Wiens noted how these days life just seems to be too complicated and for those of us who love to mountain bike and race, we are faced with the added pressure of finding the time to train while also working and taking care of our families while we rush around the city trying to do all of our other daily tasks.
Wiens is very aware of keeping a balance between training and family. He and his wife agreed that their kids are number one and they want to spend time and take care of their own kids, rather than drop them off at day care. “Of course this is a personal decision and I really like walking my kids to school or some days we even ride our bikes,” said Wiens, “I have even found the time to coach my sons hockey team. I can typically go out on rides really early in the day and be back to take care of business and home.”
“Look, you can map out your training program, which I do to a point, but you have to be flexible with it,” said Wiens, “stuff comes up, kids get sick, my wife might get called into the hospital and then that ride I planned on isn’t going to happen. Some guys have a specific program or their coach has laid out some ‘do or die’ training plan in their head. These guys feel like their whole training is going to be thrown off if they miss that one interval day.” Dave who doesn’t have a coach, hasn’t since 1994, says “I don’t let things get me down like that and so I don’t follow a ridged training program. If I cant make it out for a ride, I know that there is always tomorrow and today will just be a rest day, no big deal.”
Having a good attitude is key. Wiens says, “Be at peace with yourself. Athletes are always looking to analyze their failures, looking at all kinds of downloaded data to try to find something, whatever it might be, who knows!” Wiens definitely is not a technology junkie and falls into the category of its not the bike, its definitely the rider. He doesn’t use a power-tap and even though he has a Suunto watch, he doesn’t download any data to a computer. Would you believe, he keeps a written log of his training! “Its almost like a journal since I usually include who I was riding with and I even have the dates my sons were born noted in there. It always brings back memories of some awesome rides when I look through it,” said Wiens.
