Balancing being a daddy and a cyclist.

by Clint Hosman on September 11th, 2009

I’m sure there are plenty of ways to get this done but as of yet my inexperience tells me its going to be hard. For the last 31 years of my life I have had to clear my comings and goings by no one, now I got this little baby girl on the way and she should be here in a couple weeks. This I am aware is a game changer, every guy I know who has a kid and rides talks about the difficulties of scheduling ride time around family needs.

I know there are ways of making it happen because there are plenty of really competitive guys who have lots of kids. For me on the outside looking in however the outlook is daunting. Balancing the needs of a family with the desire to be out kicking ass is something I need the advice of all you men out there already performing this balancing act on.

In my mind if it could be pulled off successfully so that you are not neglecting the family I think it is something that would make you a hero in the eyes of your kids. Heck I’m still convinced that my old man could kick my ass simply because of all the whoopings he delivered to me as a wee one. Those lessons are formative for kids, plus knowing that your daddy is the toughest daddy on the block is a good confidence booster.

We had our first daughter when I was 31 as well. Like you I had no commitments virtually right up to that time. It was a big change and nearly cost me my marriage because I didn’t adapt. We now have four kids and after the heart ache we have a very strong relationship. The thing I find is that you have to be super efficient with your time. No sitting around putting things off and watching tv etc. Right from sunup to bedtime your on the go. You just have to let go of your ambitions a little to allow a balance to form. Once you figure out what you can achieve then you can get back into more things. Good luck dude. Exciting times ahead.
